"Grandparent" scam callers targeting Yukoners, RCMP warn

Yukoners have been hit by a fresh wave of scam telephone calls over the past couple of days.

Whitehorse RCMP Const. Dean Hoogland says the detachment has had three reports from citizens this week of the "emergency" or"grandparent" scam.

"The caller receives a phone call from a person claiming to be a grandson," he said. "In all three cases, the person had reported they were stuck in Mexico and needed $1,000to help get them out."

Hoogland says none of the local residents who called police fell for the scam.

People who suspect they've been contacted by a scammer can pass the information onto the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. The constable says people who are victims of fraud should call the Whitehorse RCMP at (867) 667-5555.
