Grizzly family successfully guided out of Whitehorse

A family of grizzlies that wandered into Whitehorse's Granger subdivision have been successfully guided out of the city by conservation officers.

The family of bears were first spotted in the highly-populated Whitehorse subdivision this morning. A media advisory released by Environment Yukon at 10 a.m. local timesaid that a grizzly and its cubs were spotted by theBigwaygrocery store on Whitehorse's Hamilton Boulevard.

Environment Yukon used trained bear dogs to guide the grizzlies out of the city, first to the Mount McIntyre trails, west of the town core, and finally to a wooded area near Fish Lake.

"Though the bears are no longer in the immediate area, Whitehorse residents are asked to manage any attractants in their yards such as garbage and pet food as well as to be mindful of their presence when using local trails," reads a release from Environment Yukon.

The release adds that conservation officers are continuing to monitor the location of thebear family.
