Hugues Latour's charges

A timeline of events for the trials of Hugues Latour, a former Inuvik, N.W.T., teacher.
Hugues Latour has lived in Inuvik, N.W.T., since 2007. He has been charged with a number of offences and still has to stand trial for charges of sexual assault and sexual interference with a minor. He also faces another trial in the future relating to child pornography charges. (Philippe Morin/CBC)

Former Inuvik, N.W.T., teacher Hugues Latouris originally from Quebec and moved to Inuvik in 2007. He taught Grades5 and6 atSir Alexander Mackenzie School and he also worked as a French immersion teacher at Samuel Hearne Secondary School.

He has not taught at either school since 2010.

  • Summer of 2010
    • Latourhas his teaching certificate cancelled.A disciplinary committee said Latour had an inappropriate relationship with a female student.
    • Note: This former student is the mother of Latour's child. The child was conceived after the student had turned 18 and graduated high school, therefore the child is not included as part of the inappropriate relationship cited by the board. They continued to date for a while after Latour was let go and after the student graduated.
  • September 2011
    • Latour is charged with forcing his way into a home and assaulting a woman.
    • He is also charged with failing to comply with the conditions of his recognizance stemming from a prior conviction in December 2010. In court, Latour said he was "in a relationship" with the 17-year-old girl (she is a different person than the mother of his child.) Latour told court he was handling large quantities of marijuana and owned a scale, however he is not charged with trafficking or possession as part of the case.
    • The assault happened at the girl's father's house after a dispute over stolen marijuana. Latour is charged with pushing the girl and rummaging through her things.
  • October 2011
    • After the September charges, police obtained a warrant to search his home.
    • Following that search,several more charges are laidagainst Latour including touching a minor for a sexual purpose, sexual assault, assault, unlawful confinement, possession of child pornography, making child pornography.

  • May 2, 2012
    • Found guilty of assault, forcible entry and breach of court conditions
    • These charges stem from the incident in September 2011 when his then-girlfriend, who was 17, stole marijuana from his house. Latour then went to her house, forced his way inside and pushed her. The girl, who cannot be named, was not hurt in the incident
    • The girl's friend was in the apartment at the time of the incident. She backed up her friend's testimony, as did Facebook messages between Latour and the girl.
  • May 5, 2012
    • Latour issentenced to 60 daysfor that conviction. He will not serve any extra time because he has been in custody since September 2011.
    • Judge called Latour's relationship with the 17-year-old girl "morally blameworthy".
    • The judge said an aggravating factor in the sentence was that the argument was over marijuana. Latour was not charged with possession or trafficking.
  • May 9, 2012
    • Latour's trial for assault and forcible confinement begins. He is accused of slapping the same 17-year-old girlfriend and then of blocking her escape from the apartment.
    • During the trial,the girl complained that it was conducted in French. She said Latour chose to have it in French a language she does not understand to intimidate her and dissuade her from speaking.
    • On the same day in Inuvik, N.W.T., Latour has a court appearance for a preliminary inquiry. That preliminary inquiry is for the charges of sexualassault and sexual interference with a minor.
  • May 10, 2012
    • Latour isfound not guilty of the assault and forcible confinementcharges.
    • The judge said the complainant's version of events was inconsistent. There were also no witnesses to back up her testimony
    • Latour has another court appearance for the preliminary hearing into the sexual assault and sexual interference with a minor under age 16.
    • Courtissues an order to exclude the public from these proceedings, in order for the witnesses to feel more comfortable.
  • May 11, 2012
    • Judgerules there's enough evidenceto proceed to a N.W.T. Supreme Court trial on charges of sexual assault and sexual interference. Latour will be tried by jury.
    • Crown adds two additional charges: possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking andinvitation to sexual touching.
  • April 2013Appeal judge overturns May 2, 2012 convictions on charges of assault, forcible entry and breach of court conditions, ruling trial judge did not properly advise Latour of his right to have the trial conducted in French. Judge orders new trial.
  • Aug. 13, 2013A lack of French-speaking jurors in Yellowknife triggers a mistrial on charges of sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and trafficking of marijuana.
  • Aug. 30, 2013Crown announces plans to stay seven chargessexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, trafficking marijuana and four counts related to the making and possession of child pornography after new information is brought forward.
