Hunter Tootoo comfortable with decision not to run

The longest-serving MLA in Nunavut says he's fine with his decision not to run again in the current territorial election, but he doesn't rule out a return to politics in future.

Long-serving MLA won't seek seat in Nunavut election

The longest sitting member of Nunavut's Legislative Assembly says he is at peace with his decision not to seek re-election.

Hunter Tootoo was first elected in 1999,in the inaugural election after Nunavut split from the Northwest Territories.

He was easily re-elected to two more terms in 2004 and 2008, representing Iqaluit Centre. Tootoo was known for his vocal criticism of the government as a regular MLA.

He was then named to Cabinet in 2008 and held several portfoliosincluding Education Minister.

Tootoo left cabinet in May 2011 to become Speaker of the house.

He says he has no immediate plans for the future, buthe's not ruling out a return to politics some day.

"There's quite a few people are disappointed but I just, I'm sorry, I need to take a break. Whether it's two years, five years, fouryears or whatever, I said I need a break," he said.
