Iqaluit man makes competitive Inuktitut quiz using app

An Iqaluit man has used the free QuizUpapp to make an Inuktitut language test that allows people to not only practise their language skills but compete with each other.

Isaac Demeester has lived in Iqaluit for six years. Heand his wife have been studying Inuktitutbuthe says they found that resources with which topractisecan be hard to come by.

"We tried different methods, flashcards and different things like that with varied success but for the purposes of our studies we decided to use QuizUp as a platform for learning," Demeester said.

"You can make quizzes about any interest or hobby that you have and then put them up for the public to use them."

Demeester said using the app to quiz family and friends on Inuktitutwas so much fun he decided to make it public and has since released a beginner and advanced quiz.

The app asks two playersthe same question and gives them points for answering correctly and quickly. The better you do, the higher your score and the more prestige you can claim.

Demeester says he has more than 30 people using the app, some as far away as Poland.

Rebecca Dodd,another Iqaluit resident, said she has taken Inuktitut classes in the past and likes the QuizUp app.

"I like that it's fast paced and I like the competition aspect as opposed to other quiz apps," she said. "There are images on it so that's always helpful and there is a different variety of questions that maybe I haven't come across.

"It's just fun to play."

Doddsaid shehopes more people download the free app and take part in the quiz so she will have more people to play against.
