Iqaluit airport terminal fire damage estimated at $1M

Iqaluit Fire Chief Luc Grandmaison says a preliminary estimate on damages from Saturday's fire at the airport's new terminal building is pegged at $1 million.

Saturday's fire at the construction site ofIqaluit's new airport terminal building caused at least$1million of damage, saysthe city's fire chief.

Luc Grandmaisonsaidthe estimate is preliminary figure.

The roof has been patched and construction work has sinceresumed on the building while Nunavut'sOffice of the Fire Marshalcontinues to investigate.

The cause of the fire has yet to bedetermined.

The Government of Nunavut said the fire would not affect its share of the cost for the project, but could not say if it would have any effect on the schedule for completionof the new terminal building.

The construction of the new terminal is part of a $300 millionrenovationof the Iqaluit International Airport, scheduledtobecompleted by the end of 2017.
