How much will it cost to swim in Iqaluit's new pool? City floats numbers

An annual pass for adults for pool and gym access would cost $1,050 under the proposed fee schedule.

Proposed fee schedule includes $4 drop-in charge for kids under 12, $8 for adults

The City of Iqaluit is looking at how much to charge people to swim in its new aquatic centre.

Over the weekend, aproposed fee schedule was tweeted by the chair of Iqaluit'sfinance committee and city councillorKuthulaMatshazi.

"What we are trying to do in the best manner as we can is get pricing that will be optimum in terms of being able to, one, pay for the service and two, contribute to paying for that asset," Matshazisaid.

While there's no official opening date yet, city officials say the $40 million aquatic centre will be open sometime mid-January.

The city has considered subsidizingrecreation fees for families who may struggle to afford them.

Pool fees

Under the current feeproposal,children under two will be free.

  • Children 12 & under: $4 for a drop-in, $7 for the day, $42 a month, $420 for the year
  • Youth 13 - 18 & seniors 60+: $6 for a drop-in, $10.50 for the day, $63 a month, $630 for the year
  • Adults: $8 for a drop-in, $14 for the day, $84 a month, $840 for the year

Gym and pool fees

Under the current proposal, the city is offering a fitness pass. The pass would offer access to a new gym inside the pool building, and would include pool access.

  • Youth 14 - 18 & seniors: $9 for a drop-in, $13.13 for a day pass, $78.75 for a month, $787.50 for the year
  • Adults 19+: $12 for a drop-in, $17.50 for a day pass, $105for a month pass, $1,050 for theyear

Swimming lessons

The city is also offering a range of aquatic programs. Under the current proposal, swimming lessons would cost $65 for a half-an-hour, $70 for 45 minutes and $77 for one hour.

Other programs that will be offered include:

  • Aquatic Leadership 1 (swim patrol, Jr.Lifeguard club): $100
  • Aquatic Leadership 2 (Bronze family courses, assistant instructor): $150
  • Advanced Leadership (NLS, instructor courses): $250

Family passes

The city is also considering offering family passes, though it's unclear how many people the pass would allow entry.

  • Pool only:$16 for a drop-in, $28 for the day, $168 for a month and $1,680 for the year
  • Pool and fitness:$24 for a drop-in, $35 for the day, $210 for a month and $2,100 for the year
