Iqaluit chooses a new cemetery site

Iqaluit City Council has decided to locate its new cemetery on the left hand side of the road to Rotary Park overlooking Tarr Inlet.

Iqaluit City Council has decided to locate its new cemetery on the left hand side of the road to the Rotary Park in Apex, overlooking Tarr Inlet.

The city scrapped an earlier ideato use a site down the Road to Nowhere.

Meagan Leach, Iqaluit's director of Engineering and Sustainability, said the new site is suitable from a geotechnical perspective and also needs less road work.

"There would be significant road upgrades required down the Road to Nowhere to access that site year round, so a significant difference between the sites is the cost of road upgrades as well as the cost of site development," said Leach.

Leach said now that a site has been decided on, the project will move on to the design phase and construction will start this summer.
