Kevin Mantla charged in Yellowknife murder, attempted murder

Kevin Mantla is facing three charges, including second-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated assault after turning himself into police following a violent attack early Monday morning in Yellowknife.

A man is facing three charges, including second-degree murder and attempted murder, in connection with an incident early Monday morning in Yellowknife.

Kevin Mantla, 36, turned himself in to RCMP Monday morning following a violent attack at an apartment on Lanky Court. When police got to the scene they found a critically injured man and woman, who were both transferred to Stanton Territorial Hospital.

It's alleged Mantla attacked his former girlfriendand her partnerin their apartment.

That partner was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the former girlfriendwas transported to an Edmonton hospitalfor treatment.

Her family says she'sundergoing surgery today to repair deep lacerations to her arm, and had surgery yesterday to treat stab wounds to her abdomen. The family says she is weak, but in stable condition.

In addition to the charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder, Mantla faces a charge of aggravated assault in connection with the attack. He has been remanded to custody and is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning.

Mantla has a history of violent behavior, includingprevious convictions ofassault, sexual assault, and assaulting a peace officer.

In 2014, he served about 100 days in jail for breaking a court order to stay away from aresidence.
