The Christmas committee in Kugluktuk, Nunavut, raised more than $20,000 this year to help families in need.

One committee member says the community's generosity is humbling.

"It's amazing," said MirandaAtatahak. "We're a tiny little community of 1,400 people and the generosity that comes out at Christmas time and even all throughout the year is amazing."

Half of the money was raised through a telethon on community radio.

The money is being used to buy turkeys and other items for 120 food hampers and 300 gifts, one for every child in the community aged 12 and under.

The giftswill be handed out on Christmas Eve, when every childwill have the chance to meet Santa Claus.

Atatahak says Christmas festivities kick off this weekend with a winter formal for teenagers and a pancake breakfast.
