Kugluktuk residents warned about rabies after dog diagnosed

A puppy from the Hamlet of Kugluktuk that was adopted and taken south has tested positive for the deadly disease in Saskatchewan. Now, Nunavut's health department is warning residents to be careful

Health officials say residents who are bitten or scratched should go to the health centre

Dog owners and residents in Kugluktuk, Nunavut, are being warned that animals in the community could have contracted rabies.

In December, a stray puppy in the community was adoptedand brought south to Saskatchewan, where it tested positive for the deadly viral disease.

It's not known where the rabies originated but it's possible other dogs in the community have it.

A release from the Department of Health warns residents notto approach any dogs that behave strangely.

It says people who arescratched or bittenshould go to a health centre immediately.

There are vaccinations available in the community.
