Mackenzie Highway reopens after fire

Officials have reopened the Mackenzie Highway from northern Alberta into the N.W.T. and Highway 1 southbound from Enterprise, N.W.T. The roads were closed late Sunday night and Monday morning due to a forest fire in the Steen River, Alta., area.

The RCMP has reopened the highway from Alberta into the N.W.T. It was closed Sunday and early Monday morning due to a fire. Highway 1 in the N.W.T., southbound from Enterprise, is also now open. (CBC)

The Mackenzie Highway northbound from Alberta into the N.W.T. has been reopened.

Police and fire authorities shut it down Sunday night after flames from a wildfire in the Steen River, Alta., area jumped the highway.

Highway 1 southbound from Enterprise, N.W.T., has also reopened.

Now,officials are most concerned about a blaze which is burning about 15 kilometres away from the hamlet of La Crete in northern Alberta.That fire has burned more than 1,000 hectares of land and hasdoubled in size over the last 24 hours.

About2,000 people live in the community.On Friday, county officials decared a state of emergency.
