Man armed with knife robs Iqaluit Quickstop

Police in Iqaluit say a robber made off with a small amount of money after pulling out a pocket knife in front of the cashier.

A man robbed the Quickstop at Iqaluit's Inuksugait Plaza Thursday night at around 8 p.m. (CBC)

A man robbed the Quickstop convenience store at InuksugaitPlaza in Iqaluit Thursday night, armed with a knife.

"I was so scared,"said cashier NicoleAmagoalik. "I wasscared it was a gun."

Amagoalik was working at the Quickstopwhen a man wearing a mask walked into the store around 8 p.m.She says he grabbed a can of Coke, walked up to the cash and started to pay but oncethe till drawer was open he pulled out a pocket knife.

"He took out his knife, and he said "Give me all your money,'" she said.

"I gave him all the money. I wasn't going to risk my life for that. Money is money. You can always get it back."

He did nottake the money from the other cash register.

Amagoalik says the robber was wearing a mask, anddescribes the suspect as having blue eyes and light skin.

She thinks he made off with just over a thousand dollars.

"First and foremost we're grateful no one was hurt in the incident," said DerekReimer, a spokesperson for the North West Company. "We're going to leave it to the local authorities to do their job."

Police in Iqaluit are investigating the incident.
