A Quebec man is in critical but stable condition after he was injured while working at the Meadowbank gold mine in Nunavut this week.

Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd., the company that owns the mine, says the man was conducting routine maintenance in an ore processing facility when a fall occurred.

The injured worker was flown to Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, then to a hospital in Winnipeg.

"Anytime there's an accident, it's serious and we take it very seriously," Agnico-Eagle spokesman Dale Coffin told CBC News on Thursday.

"His co-workers especially are very upset over the incident, and we're certainly keeping them all abreast of details once they become available on his condition."

Agnico-Eagle did not release the worker's name, butsays said the man is from Abitibi, Que. The man's family has travelled to Winnipeg to be with him, Coffin said.

The company did not give further details about the fall, as the incident is under investigation.

The Meadowbank mine is located about 110 kilometres by road north of Baker Lake in Nunavut's Kivalliq region.
