Cleanup continues after diesel spill at Agnico Eagle facility near Rankin Inlet, Nunavut

A 30,000-litre diesel spill at Agnico Eagle's Meliadine project near Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, is expected to be cleaned up by Tuesday depending on the weather, according to the site's general manager.

Cleanup crews have been working at the site since the fuel leaked from a hose connected to a 100,000-litre fuel storage tank Saturday, said Martin Plante, the site's general manager.

"We're doing everything to contain this spill and clean it up properly,"Plantesaid.

Plante said the diesel did not reach any freshwater and material affected by the spill has been excavated. A third-party is going to continuetesting to ensure the area was not contaminated, he said.

"Any spill is taken seriously," he said. "We monitor, we track and we clean any spill that is as small as one litre."

The company is stillinvestigating the root cause of the spill.
