Nunavut Arctic College will not reopen Ukkivik Residence

Ukkivik Residence was extensively damaged by water this April, following a fire in a room. Administration says all of the students who took classes and lived in the building will be accommodated.

Nunavut Arctic College will not be renovating or reopening Iqaluit's Ukkivik Residence, but administration says there will be living accommodations and classroom spaces for all students.

In April, the dorm, known locally as 'Old Res,' was extensively damagedby water after a fire in one of the building's rooms set off the sprinkler system. RCMP later charged a 34-year-old man with arson with disregard for human life.

Last year, the building also underwent extensive renovations to remove asbestos and mould.

A number of classes were also held in theUkkivik Residence. The college says it is co-ordinatingits programs, so otherclassroom spacecan be shared.
