Nunavut gets two more judges

Andrew Mahar of Iqaluit and Bonnie Tulloch of Ottawa were appointed judges for the Nunavut Court of Justice on Friday by federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson.

Two new judges were added to the Nunavut Court of Justice on Friday.

Andrew Mahar of Iqaluit and Bonnie Tulloch of Ottawa were appointed by federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson.

Nunavut Chief Justice Robert Kilpatrickasked the federal government for two more judges in 2010, saying the current four were overworked.

Mahar has been practising law in Iqaluit since 2001. Prior to that he practised in Yellowknife from 1997 to 2001, and was the clinic director of the Kitikmeot Law Centre in Cambridge Bay from 1994 to 1997.

Tulloch is currently a lawyer with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada in Ottawa. She was with the Keewatin Legal Services Centre Society from 1998 to 2000, practised criminal law in Iqaluit from 2003 to 2004 and worked with the Legal Services Board of Nunavut from 2000 to 2003.

She became a Crown prosecutor in Nunavut in 2004, and was regional director for Nunavut with the Department of Justice from 2005 to 2008.

The appointments take effect immediately.
