Nunavut land use plan final hearings coming to a regional centre near you

Responding to concerns about a single, omnibus land use plan hearing in the capital, the Nunavut Planning Commission is now planning three regional hearings.

The Nunavut Planning Commission has responded to concerns about its planned 10-day final hearing in Iqaluit.

It's now proposing three regional hearings on its final land use plan.

"It's a more focused approach. It's a regional approach. It's closer to the communities in their specific regions and it makes sense," said Sharon Ehaloak, the commission's executive director.

The move addresses concerns from the three regional Inuit associations, the Nunavut Association of Municipalities and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.

Hearings are now scheduled in:

  • Iqaluit March 21 to 26;
  • Rankin Inlet June 23 to 27;
  • and Cambridge Bay Oct. 24 to 27.

The commission has posted its schedule for the Iqaluit hearings.

It includes 67 speakers scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday, with additional sessions Sunday.
