Judge finds Nunavut premier's son guilty of sexual interference

A Nunavut court judge has found Ian Taptuna, the son of Premier Peter Taptuna, guilty of sexual interference in a case involving a 10-year-old girl.

A Nunavutcourt judgehas found Ian Taptuna, the son ofPremier Peter Taptuna, guilty of sexual interference.

Justice Beverly Browne delivered her verdict in the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit Friday.

Ian Taptuna, 24, went on trial Thursday facingcharges of sexual assault and sexual interference.

The complainant, a 10-year-old girl, allegedIan Taptuna sexually assaulted her in February. Taptuna argued it wasall a misunderstanding and he was just tucking her into bed.

Premier Peter Taptuna's office issued a statement Friday:"This is a very difficult situation for all involved, and we continue to request privacy."

Ian Taptuna had no comment as he left the courthouse. Heis outon bail and cannot have contact with the victim.

A sentencing hearing has been set forSept. 2.
