Nunavut RCMP are warning people in the territory that elder abuse is on the rise.

The police met with elders in Iqaluit on Friday.

Sergeant Yvonne Niego says police want to help improve services for them.

Some of the suggestions from elders included setting up a shelter specifically for them in case of emergencies. Niego also has a suggestion.

"Finance abuse is one of the most common forms of abuse against elders, so one idea was to facilitate elders receiving direct deposits when that cheque comes out, sometimes people will take advantage of elders," Niego said.

She says the RCMP want to improve their connection with elders.

They also want to make sure they know how to contact police and other resources when they need support.
