Nunavut RCMP to review security measures

Nunavut RCMP have ordered a review of their security procedures after a police handgun was stolen from the Arviat detachment and used in a rampage Friday night.

In that incident, a 26-year old man was reported to be walking around town shooting at dogs with the pistol.

The RCMP eventually shot the suspect during their arrest. The suspect is now recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.

The pistol was stolen from the detachment April 10.

"We knew it would be a matter of time for it to show up and we were hoping it would show up in a manner that would not cause any compromise to public security and safety, but unfortunately that was not the case," said Chief Superintendent Steve McVarnock, the commanding officer of the Nunavut RCMP.

McVarnock said he ordered a review of the theft shortly after it occurred.

The review has been completed and he is waiting for the final report.

McVarnock said this is the first time he knows of in his 31 years of service where a police firearm has been stolen.
