Nunavut to begin monitoring food prices

The Nunavut government will start monitoring food prices in the territory later this month.

The Nunavut government will start monitoring food prices in the territory later this month.

Peter Taptuna, the minister responsible for the Nunavut Anti-Poverty Secretariat, said the survey will start as a pilot project in 10 communities.

"We're the only jurisdiction that doesn't do that specific type of survey to help us develop a policy and understand fully what's happening out there in our smaller communities," he said.

Volunteers will visit retail stores to determine the cost ofdifferent goods to get an idea of the cost of living in various communities.

The Anti-Poverty Secretariat will work with the Nunavut Bureau of Statistics to collect the information.
