Pangnirtung's month-long state of emergency lifted

The Hamlet of Pangnirtung has lifted the state of emergency it issued April 2 after a fire at the power plant caused a community-wide power outage.

The Hamlet of Pangnirtunghas lifted the state of emergency itissued April 2after a fire at the power plant caused acommunity-wide power outage over Easter weekend.

Temporary power was restored four days later using emergency generators but the state of emergency remained until a longer-term solution could be put in place.

Four self-contained generator unitswere delivered to the communityfrom Iqaluit by a heavy-lift Sikorsky S-64F Skycrane helicopter last month. The helicopter was itself delivered to the Nunavut capital by a massiveAntonov124 cargo aircraft.

The Government of Nunavutsays the system is a "mid-term power solution" that willprovide"full, stable power to all residences and buildings."
