Peter Mackey fired from Qulliq Energy Corp.

CBC has confirmed that Peter Mackey was fired as the President of the Qulliq Energy Corporation yesterday.

Mackey told the CBC he plans to meet with Nunavut government officials today to discuss the reasons for his dismissal.

He also said he wasn't surprised by the news, now that Nunavut has a new premierand a new direction.

Mackey was appointed to the position by Premier Eva Aariak in March, 2009. At the time, he was director of the operations and information technology. Mackey initially worked with the Northwest Territories Power Corporation, then Nunavut Power, before it became QEC.

QEC has been involved in a number of lawsuits recently brought by ex-employees whove alleged they were wrongly dismissed. In at least one case, a judge agreed and awarded the former employee $134,000.

Mackey also faced allegations that has he used employees to carry out work at a house he co-owned in Iqaluit in the summer of 2011.RCMP investigated but found no criminal charges.

Two years ago, Nunavut Tunngavik also voiced concerns about QEC, specifically about the power utility's treatment of Inuit employees by senior officials. Qulliq lost several long time Inuit employees in recent years;some quit, others were fired.
