Proposed mine concerns Fort Resolution, N.W.T., residents

Some people in Fort Resolution, N.W.T., are worried the proposed Tamerlane lead and zinc mine could hurt the environment.

Some people in Fort Resolution, N.W.T.,are worried the proposed Tamerlane lead and zinc mine could hurt the environment.

Garry Bailey, president of the Fort Resolution Metis Council and the community's mayor, said drilling has started, but people who live in the area weren't consulted.

"Tamerlane is going to come here, take out a million tonnes and if the market goes down, well that's the end of the process. And we don't benefit nothing out of it. Meanwhile, they've contaminated all that area and we're left with another Pine Point Mine," said Bailey.

That mine closed in the late 1980s, but some of the infrastructure remains.

Bailey said people feel another mine could damage the water, as well as fish and animal habitat. He said the area is still recovering from Pine Point.

The community will meet with the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board Thursday night.
