Fire destroys community freezer in Qikiqtarjuaq

A building used to butcher and store game was gutted by a fire Tuesday morning.

No one was in the building at the time, community's SAO says

The building is still standing, but the community freezer in Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut, was gutted by fire Tuesday morning.

Nobody was inside at the time, saidGeela Kooneeliusie, the hamlet's senior administrative officer, in Inuktitut.

The building is run by the hunters and trappers organization andwas used to butcher and store game for individuals or for sharing.

"Without doubt, many will be affectedby this," Kooneeliusie said.

She hopesto see the facility replaced.

There's no official word yet on what caused the fire.
