Resolute will not run out of gasoline, says minister

The Nunavut Minister of Community and Government Services says people in Resolute, Nunavut, will not run out of gasoline despite a spill last week.

Spill leaked 25 per cent of community's fuel

People in Resolute, Nunavut, will not run out of gasoline, says the territory's Minister of Community and Government Services.

This is despite a spill in the community last week, when about 87,000 litres of gasoline leaked from the tank farm.

Lorne Kusugak said that amounts to about 25 per cent of the community's entire supply.

"We will monitor it and if it looks like we will run short, I will make sure they have adequate gasoline," he said.

Kusugak said the tanks were full at the time. The gas has been contained by a berm around the tank farm.

"Something like this it will take at least a week or two to clean up," Kusugak said."They'll get on site, they'll take a look at what's there. When I was there, it was all under snow.So they've got a lot of work ahead of them."

He said the territorial government will pay for the cleanup, for now.

RCMP have said some valves were left open at the tank farm, but could not say whether it was intentional or an accident. The RCMP is still investigating the spill.
