Sanikiluaq teen threatens to enter school with shotgun

A 15-year-old boy is facing firearms charges after he allegedly threatened to enter Sanikiluaq's school with a gun on Friday.

A 15-year-old boy is facingfirearms chargesafter he allegedly threatened to enter Sanikiluaq's school with a gun.

Nunavut RCMP spokespersonCpl. David Lawson says the incident happened around lunchtime Friday afternoon.

Lawsonsays a teenhad a shotgun and was threatening to enter Nuiyak School. The school went into lockdown.

"In every school in Nunavut they have a lock-down procedure, as per a safe plan," says Lawson.

"When it's put in place, the whole school is locked down. No one goes in or out until the RCMP gives them the go-ahead."

Soon after the incident, a 15-year-old boy turned himself in to police. A 12-gauge shotgun was later seized by police.

Lawson says the shotgun was never used and no one was injured.

"It ended well and we're happy no one was injured as a result," he says.

The teen has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and careless use of a firearm.
