RCMP say they have begun a review of the recommendations made by acoroner's jury examining the death of Solomon Uyarasuk in police custody.

Uyarasuk died at the IgloolikRCMP detachment in September 2012. The coroner's jury made nine recommendations on Friday to prevent similar deaths from occurring.

In a news release, police say the review will take place locally and also in collaboration with National Policy Centresto make sure the recommendations are reviewed by the organization as a whole.

Police say Nunavut's VDivision has already started a number of processes to ensure prisoner safety, including installing closed circuit cameras in cell blocks, developing orientation packages for relief officers and doing regular inspections of detachments.

One of the jury's recommendations was to reopen the investigation into Uyarasuk's death.

Police say a full investigation into the circumstances of Uyarasuk's death was completed independently by the Ottawa Police Service and its findings were reported directly to the Office of the Chief Coroner.
