RCMP have seized four starving dogs found on an island near Whati, N.W.T., Sunday.

Police received a call on Sunday from someone who had seen dogs on the island about 2.5 km away from the community. There, officers found an emaciated female dog and three puppies.

The female and her pups have since been taken in by a community member and are being cared for until they are strong enough to fly to Yellowknife where the N.W.T. SPCA is awaiting their arrival.

"We've got lots of offers even from down south from some of the rescues, they're willing to take her and her puppies, but they'll stay here for a little while to get healthy," said Nicole Spencer. "She'll get adopted without a doubt.

"If people can't handle or they don't want their dogs anymore, then they can contact the SPCA and we will do the best that we can for the dog. This kind of treatment of animals isn't humane and shouldn't be tolerated."

The RCMP are investigating.
