Cape Dorset man charged in brother's death

A 19-year-old Cape Dorset, Nunavut, man has been charged with second-degree murder after the body of his older brother was found in a home on Sunday.

Arrest followed 3-hour armed standoff on Sunday

A 19-year-old Cape Dorset, Nunavut, man has been charged with second-degree murder after the body of his older brother was found in a home on Sunday.

Elee Geetah has also been charged with assault and five counts of discharging a firearm with intent, along withthree other firearm-related charges and three counts of mischief.Geetah was arrested after a 3-hour armed standoff Sunday at a home in the Baffin Island community.

The body of Jamesie Simigak, 23, also of Cape Dorset, was found insidethe residenceafter the standoff ended, according to police.

LocalRCMP responded to a call around 2:40 p.m. ET Sunday about shots being fired in a local residence. At the scene, they found an armed man had barricaded himself inside the home.

"There were several gunshots fired from within that residence," Staff Sgt. Steve Bergerman told CBC News on Tuesday, adding that the RCMP's critical incident commander,its Iqaluit-based emergency response team and a negotiator were brought in.

"The investigation revealed that there was a suspicious death inside that residence,"the officer added."It also revealed that the suspect was armed with several long guns and ammunition."

Geetah is in police custody and a court date is pending. The RCMP's major crimes unit is investigating.

Sunday's incident marks the second shooting death within the past month in Cape Dorset, a hamlet of about 1,200 located 400 kilometres west of Iqaluit on the southwestern coast of Baffin Island.

On Sept. 19, RCMP officers found Mappaluk Adla dead inside a home in the community. An 18-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with that case.

"Anything like this happens and the community is shocked," Bergerman said. "Now they have to have the time to grieve."
