Man charged with murder in Iqaluit woman's death

A Cape Dorset, Nunavut, man has been charged with first-degree murder in the 2009 death of an Iqaluit woman over two years ago, according to the RCMP.

Jeffrey Salomonie, 44, was arrested on Monday and charged in connection with the May 2009 death of 33-year-old Daisy Curley in the territorial capital, RCMP announced on Tuesday.

Curley wasfound deadinside her home in Iqaluit's Happy Valleysubdivision on May 24, 2009.

After RCMP ruled her death a homicide, police and members of Curley's family frequentlyappealed to the publicfor any information that could solve the crime.

But no arrest was until Monday, when RCMP arrested a person in Cape Dorset, Sgt. Jimmy Akavak said.

Akavak said the arrest was the result of an intensive two-year investigation, in which two retired Mounties with experience in murder investigations helped review the information that was gathered after Curley's death.

As a result of the review, a team of Nunavut RCMP investigators began working full-time on the case in January.

"I can't speak too much on the details of the investigation, but it resulted in talking to many people, statements, leads," Akavak told CBC News on Tuesday.

Salomonie was arrested without incident in Cape Dorset and is in custody. No court date has yet been set, according to police.
