Former Nunavut teacher charged with multiple sex offences

A former Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, teacher has been charged with 29 sexual offences said to have happened between 1984 and 2006.

A former Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, teacher has been charged with sexual offences.

Johnny Meeko, 58, faces 29 charges of sexual offences against eight different victims. Police say the oldest alleged victim is 37 and the youngest in the mid-teens.

All of the alleged offences are said to have happened between 1984 and 2006.

Meeko has been a teacher at Nuiyak Elementary School in the community since 1973. All of the offences are alleged to have happened at the school.

The RCMP said a resident prompted the investigation.

"This investigation was lodged by a local member of the community who attended the Sanikiluaq detachment and made some allegations that they had been assaulted by Johnny Meeko of Sanikiluaq," said RCMP Const. Ian Allen.

The RCMP ask any witnesses or other victims to contact them.
