Yukon skater wins silver in South Korea

Yukon figure skater Michael Sumner won a silver medal at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in South Korea Thursday.

Yukon figure skater Michael Sumner won a silver medal at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in South Korea Thursday.

The 16-year-oldsaid the games are something he'll never forget.

"There's like 500 people watching and cheering," he said. "It feels a little nervous because Whitehorse is not a big city and there are barely any people in the games centre to cheer on people skating."

Sumner wrapped up his skating competitions in PyeongChang Thursday but he said he'll be in the stands cheering for his team mates and all the competitors yet to take to the ice and the slopes before the closing ceremonies on Tuesday.

He is only athlete from Yukon at the games. Cynthia Simmons of N.W.T. is competing with the speedskating team.
