The trades are proving popular for students enrolling at Yukon College this year.

To date there's a total of 705 part-time and full-time students registered. This compares with 586 last year.

Carpentry, mechanics and welding are among the courses seeing the biggest increases.

"I mean this is always good news for colleges, we're very happy that people are looking at career opportunities in the Yukon and there are going to be quite a number of them," says Stu Mackay, dean of professional studies at the college.

"We have a lot of people who are skilled trades people who are retiring and there was a gap that came directly after them and now that gap is being filled by the next generation."

Numbers for how many students are enrolled at the college in the communities have yet to come in.
