Taloyoak votes against creating alcohol education committee

The community of Taloyoak, Nunavut, has voted to keep access to alcohol unrestricted, governed only by the territory's general liquor laws.

57% vote to keep access to alcohol unrestricted

The community of Taloyoak, Nunavuthas voted to keep access to alcohol unrestricted, governed only by the territory's general liquor laws.

The community held a plebiscite on creating an alcohol education committee, where individuals have to apply to thecommittee to bring liquor into the community. The committee can then accept the application, deny it outright, or place restrictions on the amount of liquor being purchased.

Twohundred and forty-four valid votes were cast, with 43 per cent voting to establish the committee and 57 per centopposed.

To change the system, 60per cent of people would have had to be in favour.
