Man charged after shots fired outside Fort Good Hope community meeting

A 49-year-old man is facing seven charges after gunshots were fired outside Fort Good Hope's band office Friday night during a community meeting.

Tony Kakfwi facing 7 charges including carrying weapon while attending public meeting

A 49-year-old man has been charged after gunshots were fired outside Fort Good Hope's band office Friday night during a community meeting.

When the shots were fired around 7 p.m., people at the meeting took cover. They later escaped the band office through a back door and took refuge at the health centre.

The suspect barricaded himselfinsidean apartment in the community's elders' complex.He surrendered to police two and a half hours later.

TonyKakfwi, 49, of Fort Good Hope is facing seven firearms-related charges:

  • discharging firearm with intent
  • carrying weapon while attending public meeting
  • uttering threats
  • 2 counts careless use of firearm
  • possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • using firearm in commission of offence

Kakfwi is scheduled to appear in territorial court in Yellowknife on Wednesday.
