Man reported missing after bear 'encounter' near Tulita found dead

A man who was reported missing after a "bear encounter" near Tulita, N.W.T.,has been found dead, RCMP have confirmed.

Police say they found the body of the missing man Friday afternoon.

Apost-mortem examination has been ordered, and they are working withthe NWT Coroner Service on an investigation., RCMP said in a news release.

"Evidence in the investigation confirms a bear encounter," say RCMP.

They said the territorial Department of Environment and Natural Resources is also assisting in the investigation.

On Thursday RCMP said they were respondingto an emergency beacon signal activated in an area approximately 50 kilometres south of Tulita accessible only byair or water.

Personnel from RCMP and the Department of Environment and Nature Resources travelled to the area by helicopter.

"A woman reported her travelling companion had an encounter with a bear. The man was reported missing after the encounter,"RCMP spokespersonMarie York-Condonsaid in an earlier press release Friday.

RCMP say the womanmade contact with a second group of travellers who activated their emergency communications device.

The woman and the members of the other party have all been extracted from the area.
