Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation election to be held May 2

Members of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation in Old Crow, Yukon, many of whom are frustrated with their current chief and council, will go to the polls May 2.

Members of the VuntutGwitchin First Nation in Old Crow, Yukonmany of whom are frustrated with their current chief and councilwill go to the polls May 2.

Residents had been circulating a petition in the community calling for the current chief and council to resign.

Deputy Chief Stan Njootli said Friday the current council will be dissolved on March 31.Njootlisays the current council will see the business of the First Nation through to the end of the fiscal year.

Council will vote on an appropriations bill before officially calling for elections.

Some of the community's concerns stem from recent charges filed against Chief Roger Kyikavichik, who was charged with sexual assault in December.

The case is still before the courts.
