Mike Gladish wins sixth council seat after tight race forced a recount

The results of the Whitehorse municipal election are now official. The city's chief returning officer confirmed Monday morning that Mike Gladish will be the sixth Whitehorse city councillor.

On election night Gladish was just two votes ahead of Roslyn Woodcock for the final position on council.

The tight race forced a recount, which put Gladish ahead by three votes.

Chief Returning Officer Norma Felker said it was a big job to manually count all of the ballots again.

"We had to work all weekend. It took us a full fourteen hours to do the actual recounting of the ballots," Felker said.

In the unofficial results, Gladish finished sixth with 1534 votes, and Woodcock finished seventh with 1532 votes. Forty-one ballots were rejected.

Felker said the recount did not show any major changes in ballot numbers.

Mayor-elect Dan Curtis and council will be sworn-in Oct. 29.
