Whitehorse grizzly bear may be gone

A grizzly bear that was knocking over trash bins in two Whitehorse neighbourhoods this week may have left the area, according to Yukon conservation officers.

A grizzly bear that was knocking over trash bins in two Whitehorse neighbourhoods this week may have left the area, according to Yukon conservation officers.

Environment Department officers had been patrolling wooded areas in the Porter Creek and Takhini neighbourhoods, twice a day, since the three-year-old male grizzly was seen tipping over several residents' garbage and compost bins on Sunday.

The officers said in a release late Wednesday that they have not seen any sign of the bear recently, sothey assume it has likely moved on.

Still, conservation officers said they will continue to bait a bear trap for a few more days. They warned the public to stay away from the trap, since the scent of humans anywhere near it will scare the bear away.
