The City of Whitehorse is investigating an illegal dumping incident behind the McCraeindustrialarea.

Tom Wyers, bylaw services supervisor, says nine residential furnace fuel tanks were left near an access road by the Yukon River. He found out about themlast week.

Wyers says the city is investigating, alongside Yukon'senvironment and conservation departments.

"We gleaned some evidence from the tanks," he said.

Wyers says companies that remove fuel tanks from residential properties are required to get permits from the city that can be traced back to the owner.

"At present, we're just following up on the investigation," he said.

After officials removethe abandoned tanks, Environment Yukon will determine if any fuel has been spilled. At that point, it could pursue charges.

Wyerssays while illegal dumping is a "huge" issue in the city, this is the first time he has dealt with abandoned fuel tanks since he started working for bylaw services more than two years ago.
