Whitehorse residents on edge after arson fires

The spate of recent arson fires in Whitehorse has set some people on edge.

One of the victims says the fires aregetting closer to peoples' homes and becoming more dangerous. They want the fire-starters caught soon.

Joanna Zycki's mini-van was set on fire in her Riverdale driveway last weekend and it almost took their home with it. It was in the middle of the night, and with a seven month old baby in the house, it's worrisome.

"Jeff and I are quite scared to go to sleep at night, we set the dogs out in their allocated places now, and it's really scary, it can be quite traumatizing," said Zycki.

Zycki hopes the arsonist can be stopped before anything worse happens.

"I think it's really important for someone like this to be apprehended because this isn't just a basic level of vandalism anymore, right, because people can get really hurt with something like this," she said.

The rash of recent fires include ones set in greenbelts, in portable toilets at Rotary Park and two vehicles.

Fire chief Clive Sparks says anyone with information should contact the police.

"Keep an eye on our neighbourhoods and certainly if you see anything suspicious, let the RCMP know, and if you see any kind of a fire call 911 andget us going so we can deal with it as quickly aswe can," Sparks said.

The RCMP are investigating and looking to see if there's a link between all the fires.
