Woman dies after wheelchair hit by truck in Whitehorse

A woman in a motorized wheelchair has died after being struck by a pickup truck on Second Avenue in Whitehorse last night.

The coroner has not released the name of the victim who was pronounced dead at the Whitehorse hospital

Police have been at the scene of a collision in downtown Whitehorse since 6:30 p.m. yesterday. They are investigating the death of a 71-year-old woman who was operating a motorized wheelchair. (Sandi Coleman/CBC)

The RCMP are investigating the scene of a fatal crashin downtown Whitehorse.

A 71-year-old woman operating a motorized wheelchair was struck by pickup truck on Second Avenue near Strickland Street at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.

The womanwas taken to Whitehorse General Hospital, where she waspronounced dead. Her namehas not been released.

The driver of the pickup truck has been identified as a 72-year-old woman. RCMP said the cause of the collision hasn'tbeen determined, butalcohol doesn'tappear to be a factor.

Police said it'stoo early to say if any charges will be laid.

The RCMP has called in a"collision reconstructionist"to investigate the scene of the accident.

The southbound lane of Second Avenue will remain closed until the scene investigation concludes.Traffic is being re-routedto Third Avenue between Alexander and Jarvisstreets.
