Canadian High Arctic Research Station contractor charged after worker injured

The Workers Safety and Compensation Commission has laid charges against the contractor building the Canadian High Arctic Research Station after a worker was injured on the job last year.

1st court appearance in Cambridge Bay later this month

The Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission has laid charges against the contractor building the Canadian High Arctic Research Station in Cambridge Bay,after a worker was injured on the job last year.

The charges allege various offences of the Nunavut Safety Act, including failure to ensure adequate instruction to workers in the safe performance of their duties, and failure to take all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of persons in the establishment.

The employers, supervisors, and workers charged are EllisDon Corporation, Kitnuna Projects Inc., Best Choice Construction (RB) Ltd., EXP Services Inc., Dan Cress, Abraham Leonard Houweling, Justin McDonnell and Rod Osmond.

Construction on the station in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, began in 2014 and is expected to be completed by 2017.

The worker was injured at the site in August 2015.

The first court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 19 in Cambridge Bay.
