Yellowknife city workers are set to paint bike lanes on the city's main street starting next month.

They'll paint the lanes along Franklin Avenuefrom 44 Street to Latham Island.

Cyclist Anna Bergen says the new lane is a good start.

"We don't do a really good job at promoting biking because there isn't a safe place, especially for young people who aren't necessarily road savvy," she said.

"I think the fact that they're doing it on the main drive is very important. There's not a lot of shoulder."

City administrator Dennis Kefalas says eventually the city will paint a lane along 52nd Avenue, avoiding the heavy traffic on Franklin.

He said that lane will reach out to all the major hubs in the city.
