ATCO Electric warns Yukon business owners of phone scam

Yukon's power corporation says phone scammers are again targeting local businesses, threatening to cut off power unless a phony bill is paid.

Yukon's power companiesarewarning businesses about phone scammersfalselyclaiming to represent Yukon Energy,and demanding payment.

ATCO Electric says the scammerstellbusiness owners their power will be disconnected immediately, unless apower bill is paid. Some businessesare being asked to call an 800 numberto make their payment, or to use a pre-paid credit card.

The power company says neither ATCO Electric nor Yukon Energy are making such calls. It's urging anybody who receives one to contact the company, or the RCMP.

Stephanie Cunhaof ATCOElectric says scammers were making similar calls in Yukon lastMay and again in July.

Last week, the Northwest Territories Power Corporation warned of the samescam happening in that territory.
