Recommends open pit gold mine near Mayo be allowed to proceed

The Yukon Environmental and Socio-Economic Assessment Board is recommending Victoria Golds Eagle project be allowed to proceed.

Victoria Gold says it can now move ahead with plans to finalize financing and begin construction of its proposed mine near Mayo.

The company said it expects the territorial and federal governments will accept the boards recommendation.

The board laid out more than 100 terms and conditions it says should be part of the mine's operating permit. They mostly relate to preventing water pollution and the safe handling of cyanide used in the mine's heap leach process for extracting metals from the ore.

The mine will include a camp housing around 400 employees. The company is aiming at beginning construction this year.
