Yukon NDP tables bill to create paid lobbying registry

The YukonNDP introduced a bill Wednesday to create a lobbying registry in the territory

Most Canadian jurisdictions have regulations around lobbying, but not Yukon. Ottawa, for example,has 5,182 registered federal lobbyists whowork to represent the interests of their organizations with politicians and senior government officials.

"I think it's quite pertinent that our own conflict of interest commissioner has raised this at least five times," said Yukon NDP leader Liz Hanson.

The official opposition tabled the Paid Lobbying Act.

"We have taken the most recently passed legislation in Canada, which was passed by the Saskatchewan Party, and we've provided an example of what a Yukon paid lobbyist legislation would look like," she said.

The opposition hopes the government will also create a select committee to look into lobbying.
