Protesters from several British Columbia First Nations groups stopped in Edmonton Wednesday as part of a cross-country tour opposing a pipeline to the west coast.

Opponents of the pipeline sang protest songs and spoke on the steps of the Legislature. They say they're concerned with the enviromental impact a pipeline spill could have on their lands. (CBC)

Protesters, who have named the tour "The Freedom Train," stood on the steps of the Alberta legislature at noon to protest Enbridges plan to build the Northern Gateway pipeline to ship bitumen from Alberta to B.C. for export.

Speakers at the event worried about what would happen if there was a spill along the pipeline, saying the damage to the environment could be irreversible.

The demonstrations continue into next week. Protesters plan to arrive in Toronto for a meeting of Enbridges shareholders.
